Smartbeef

Precision livestock farming to improve the sustainability and welfare of beef cattle farms

Volver atrás

Beef cattle production is a strategic sector in the European Union with Spain being one of the leading producers.

The Smartbeef project promotes the use of Precision Livestock Farming (PLF) to improve the sustainability, animal welfare, and competitiveness of beef cattle farms. Through the deployment of new technologies and collaboration among farmers, researchers, and industry stakeholders, the project aims to foster a more efficient, safe, and sustainable production system.

Objectives

The overall objective of the Smartbeef project is to monitor and validate data from precision livestock technologies to analyse productive and behavioural indicators in beef cattle.

  • To monitor and identify relationships between feeding and growth patterns in order to manage performance parameters in feedlot beef cattle.

  • To monitor and identify behavioural indicators that may be predictive of improved performance.

  • To analyse the relationships between health issues and performance patterns in growing beef cattle.

  • To identify behavioural measures that may be predictive of health and welfare problems using continuous, individual-level data collected on beef cattle farms.

  • To integrate databases (performance, health, and behavioural data) into mathematical algorithms to improve management interventions.

  • To predict health, welfare, and performance issues using continuous, individual-level performance and behavioural data collected on beef cattle farms.
