Research Focus

Since the beginning of my career I have been working on the assessment of animal welfare based on a behavioural and physiological indicators. During my PhD I focused on research to improve animal welfare during slaughter of farmed animals, including pigs, cattle, sheep, rabbits and fish. Later on I expanded my interests on animal welfare at the farm and during transport thanks to a post doc position at Warwick University first and the Scotland´s Rural College thereafter. The former post doc position gave me the opportunity to focus my investigations to animal welfare trade-offs in climate change, focusing on mitigation and adaptation. In my current position we are seeking housing alternatives for sows and piglets during lactation that allows the improvement of animal welfare, production efficiency and decreases the environmental impact. In the future I would like to consider any research area that helps animal farming sustainability, considering the economical, ethical and environmental approach.
